Ash Class

In Ash class (Years 1 and 2), our teacher is Miss Drake with Miss Scaife supporting.

In English we use high quality non-fiction and narrative texts to learn more about our topics. We learn new vocabulary and connect features of grammar to different genres before creating our own writing based on what we have learnt together. Sometimes we perform or publish what we have written to share it with a wider audience.

Reading is very special in Ash Class. We enjoy lots of stories together, and read at the end of every day – this might be a book from Miss Drakes recommended reads, a book from the reading corner or a short chapter book. We learn to read using Read Write Inc. phonics to read and write, we then practice reading in groups to become fluent readers. We then use stories and poems for guided reading to practice the different skills needed to become a skilled reader. Each week we will be sent home with a book to enjoy with an adult and then a reading book which we are expected to read at least 5 times a week.

In Maths we work in year groups to secure fluency, reasoning and problem-solving skills. We use differentiated chilli challenges to ensure that we practice all these skills at the right level. We have a daily Maths Blast session, where we practice previous learning and consolidate our sense of numbers.

In the afternoons we have our wider curriculum lessons including PE, PSHE, art, DT, computing and Music and we link these to our topics as much as possible to embed our new learning. We then have the opportunity to practice the taught skills (plus more) during provision where we have the chance to complete different challenges. Alongside this, we have chance every week to reflect and debate in our P4C sessions. At different points in the year we will also have forest school and we will let you know when these are.

We are a very busy classroom with lots of learning taking place all of the time.
